Planning Your Event

The beauty of it is…we fly aircrafts to 32 different cities across the country. Therefore, arranging an event might be as simple as finding the nearest civilian airport. For example Las Vegas, Monterey, San Diego, Seattle or Phoenix make terrific optional venues and can be combined with golf, sailing, surfing, or racecar driving for complementary activities. Just consider the weather and the location of the nearest airport. How many other activities can say that?

Once the location and number of participants are determined, we will help you customize a Top Gun event to fulfill your needs. Whether you are looking for a relaxed "lets just go have fun" day or are looking to create a highly competitive Top Gun Challenge---Air Combat USA is your answer!

Logistics and Pricing

When planning your group event, you can expect 12 - 16 participants to complete one mission in the course of a day. The number will depend on the number of aircraft and daylight hours. We suggest briefing the entire group at their hotel the night before the first day of flying. On the flight date, participants will arrive at their scheduled flight time.

Standard pricing will apply to events scheduled at any one of our 32 locations based on the National Deployment Schedule. If you are interested in a location or a date not listed on our schedule, a travel fee will be added and a minimum of 20 participants will be required.

The Las Vegas Hilton invited selected members of the Hilton "Player's Club" to a weekend of TOP GUN flying. The invitations were mailed and to the Hilton’s surprise, twice as many people responded as they had expected. So we added days to our schedule.

The Hilton maintained the TOP GUN theme perfectly by decorating the briefing room at the hotel with camouflage netting, a 50-caliber rifle, and a camouflage painted jeep. Actual footage of military aircraft in training exercises played on a big screen TV, while guests dined mess-hall style on metal trays.

The Air Combat Instructors began the brief with the TOP GUN Challenge: who will win the cash prize for the Most Kills, the Quickest Kill, and the Highest G's? Then Bill McMillan (MAC) introduced his pilots to the group: Ben Clerx (call sign Joker), Tom Freel (call sign Disney). The briefing covered the tactics, maneuvers and strategies that would be needed to win in the aerial dogfights staged over the next several days. Keeping with the TOP GUN theme, guests were transported to the North Las Vegas Airport in a Hummer H-1. Once they arrived guest-pilots were suited up in their gear, which included their Nomex flight suit, parachute and helmet. On the way to the aircrafts the pilots reviewed the parachute brief and egress procedures in the event of an emergency.

With seat belts secured, each group of two took off in formation for the experience of a lifetime. Knowing they were competing for cash prizes, their aggressiveness took over and the fights were close. All in all, 40 people flew air combat missions. The instructors kept the videotapes from the flights to further evaluate the contenders for the prize money and to pick out some particularly humorous moments. Back to the Las Vegas Hilton, the awards ceremony was staged on the theme of the U.S. Marine Corps Ball. Marines dressed in their dress uniforms, had the crowd in stitches as they played back some funny moments during the flights. We couldn't pass up some fun awards like "the screamer" and the "looks most like a fighter pilot" award. Then it was down to the more serious awards. Cash prizes were awarded to the winners and certificates and flight videos to each participant. According to one participant and echoed by many more "it was the most amazing experience of my life". The Las Vegas Hilton repeats this event annually; a true testament of the success of any event.

The TOP GUNS at Computer Associates joined forces with the TOP GUNS at Air Combat USA for a week of aerial combat that they are still talking about. Twenty-five top sales people battled it out in the skies just east of Boeing Field in Seattle. Tuesday evening at their hotel, Jim Neubauer (USN) call sign Nails and Larry Elmore (USN) call sign Worm briefed the group on tactics and maneuvers, physiological factors involved in g-forces and the aircraft performance of both the SIAI Marchetti and the Extra 300L. Worm with over 10,000 parachute jumps, briefed the group on the bail out and parachute procedure.

At 0700 hours on Wednesday morning the sun was shining on Boeing Field, and guest pilots began arriving for the first of two missions as part of the Fighter Lead In Program. Dressed in Nomex flight suits, helmets and parachutes, each participant reviewed the safety items and then walked with their instructors to the aircraft. After the first day and twenty sorties, the trash talking at dinner Wednesday evening added to the anticipation for the remaining flyers that would fly the next day. All in all twenty guest-pilots flew two missions over two and one-half days to complete an exciting and memorable event. Participants were awarded authentic leather flight jackets and leather nametags with each one’s name and call signs on them. The emails continue to roll in from the participants.
